Sunnyside Wood

A 25ha scheme between Packington and Ashby de la Zouch, Sunnyside Wood opencast in the 1940s and 50's then restored to agriculture.  A mixture of 83% broadleaves and 17% conifers have been planted on the site.  Commercial poplar is planted next to the new wetland area where withies (willows) are being grown for eventual use in basket weaving. Native black poplar trees are also planted in this area.

A bird hide overlooks the wetland and a viewing platform in the woodland clearing on the high ground enables good views all round.  Bat boxes in the surrounding mature trees provide roosting and nesting habitat.
