John's Wood

A 34.6 ha woodland in two parts near Ashby de la Zouch, which were planted in 1999 and 2002. John's Wood has a strong nature conservation focus and links with other new woodlands in the area.  The woodland has been designed to be both attractive and productive. Widely spread poplar is found in the damper areas adjacent to the new pond and withy bed. Native black poplar, one of the National Forest Biodiversity Action Plan target species, has also been included. A boardwalk has been laid through the wetland in the first phase.  Bat boxes have been installed and bluebells will be introduced as the wood matures.  Open grassland is managed as hay meadow.

A new dedicated footpath through the site links the B5003 to an existing Right of Way to the west.
