Saltersford Valley

A 5.4ha site consisting of woodland, wet flashes and meadows on a landscape formed through mining subsidence.  The site, owned by Leicestershire County Council, includes a rolled stone car park and link paths.  Wheelchair users may need assistance in places.

Designated as a Local Nature Reserve, Saltersford Valley was awarded a Forestry Authourity Centre of Excellence award in 1994.  Oak, ash, cherry, hazel, guelder rose and dogwood plantings form a native woodland.  Open grass areas are being managed as traditional hay meadows.  On the banks of the flashes there are fishing platforms for the disabled and a board walk gives access accross part of the lake.  Look out for the two wooden sculptures on the theme of fishing, sculpted by Simon Todd and chosen by local people.

A leaflet is available from Leicestershire County Council.
